Going to the grocery store here is a bit of an adventure since while there are some familiar brands and products, there are also thinks that are completely new to me.
Like pretty every grocery store that I've ever been to, there are several apple varieties, most of which I recognized (Gala, Fuji, Jonagold, etc.) There were however a couple that were completely new to me - Cox Orange and Pinova.
In reading about the Cox Orange, I was intrigued by the statement that the seed rattle when the apple is shaken - something that is totally true! I was more than a little amused by that.
Taste wise, the ones that I have had so far have been very crisp and juicy and tart.
The Pinovas have been just as juicy, almost as crisp and a lot sweeter.
The other thing that I thought was very interesting is that due to the tartness and acidity of the Cox Orange, it does not brown very fast at all. In fact, when I first tried them, I cut into the Cox Orange first and the Pinova second, and the Pinova browned almost immediately while there was no noticible browning of the Cox Orange between when I cut into it and when I ate it (within a 30-40 minutes).
